ABE 99 Cruise to the Southern East Pacific Rise

The Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution acquired an extremely high resolution near-bottom multisensor dataset along and across the narrow neovolcanic and active tectonic zone of the southern East Pacific Rise (17-19S).  Exploiting its abilities for precise navigation, trackline following, and bottom-following in rough terrain, ABE collected bathymetry, magnetics, temperature, optical backscatter, conductivity, and digital video imaging. The dives were conducted at a depth of approximately 2600 meters over 19 individual nighttime deployments from the RV Atlantis.

Here's a link to a paper wel presented at UUST99. It contains an engineering description of the cruise and shows some data products from the northern area we covered at the end of the cruise

Here's another link to a paper we've submitted to the 2000 IEEE Int. Conf. on Robotics and Automation. It shows results from the 3 dives we made on the rift valley segment. It shows bottom following results and the bathymetry and temperature maps.
